The City of Vilnius, became the Birthplace of the Divine Mercy Devotion, when Saint Faustina began her mission under the guidance and discernment of her new Spiritual Director Fr. Michael Sopocko. When Saint Faustina lived in this City before the Second World War, it was politically part of Poland, but today it has reverted to being the capital of an independent nation, Lithuania.
Father Igor Simonovis was a diocesan priest in Concordia-Pordenone in northern Italy, near the Austrian border. For about ten years He was a pastor of four parishes in the mountain region Val d'Arzino, and in one of his parishes the first community of Brothers of Merciful Jesus came into being.
Many people associate the Divine Mercy message and St.Faustina with Poland but St. Faustina lived the biggest part of her convent life in Vilnius, Lithuania. The confusion arises because it was politically part of Poland at that time and this is why many people confuse Poland and Crakow in particular with the message of Divine Mercy.
The Importance of Fr. Michael Sopocko in Jesus’ plan for Divine Mercy revelations can not be over estimated. Jesus said to St. Faustina: "He will be My visible help for you on earth. He will help you to carry out My will " (Diary 53)."His thoughts are closely united to Mine, so be at peace about what concerns My work. I will not let him make a mistake, and you should do nothing without his permission" (Diary 1408).
Between 1931 – 1938, Jesus revealed to St. Faustina the new Devotion to Divine Mercy. He desired that there be a new Feast in honour of His Divine Mercy within the Church. He told her that, “This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of My tender mercies. Every soul believing and trusting in My mercy will obtain it” (Diary 420).
Our Lord’s love for us is both Divine and human, for He possesses both a Divine and a human nature and will. Hence we may regard the Savior’s Most Sacred Heart as the symbol of His threefold love for us - divine love, spiritual human love and sensitive human love.

After Saint Faustina’s final vows she was sent to the convent in Vilnius. She said, because of my frequent changes (to many different convents), I did not have a permanent spiritual director and I had great difficulty in speaking of these things, (the messages received from God). (Diary 34)
